“Innovative, easy-to-use, affordable.”
The ndds checklist is an easy-to-use, one-page developmental tool to be completed by a parent or professional. The 13 checklists follow a child from 1 month of age up to 6 years. Each perforated page can separate into two parts; a short list of “yes” or “no” questions about the child’s abilities and a handout of activities to promote development.
The ndds checklist only takes a few minutes to complete. There is no scoring involved and it can be answered using what parents already know about their child’s abilities. Remembering when it’s time for the next checklist is simple, too, because it conveniently coincides with the child’s early immunization schedule.
Designed by a non-profit organization with the goal of increasing access to developmental tools, the ndds checklist promotes interaction between parents and professionals by creating opportunities for discussion and education that are essential to a child’s development. It is also culturally sensitive, clearly identifying items with cultural considerations.
The areas of development covered by the ndds checklist and activities include:
The ndds is completed in three quick steps:
1. Choose the checklist that matches the child's age.
If the child falls between two ages, use the earlier checklist. Healthcare professionals may want to correct for prematurity based on their current clinical practice.
2. Ask the questions and record the answers.
Based on observation or parent’s pre-existing knowledge, answer “yes” or “no” for each question.
3. Determine the appropriate follow-up and detach the activities for the parent.
If there are any “no” answers, engage in a dialogue with the parent and facilitate a referral, if necessary. If all answers are “yes”, schedule an appointment to do the next checklist.
